After 3.11 in Japan

この写真は佐藤さんのブログから引用させていただきました。左下の写真に映っている蛍光ピンクのテープ、私が仕分けしたときに使ったものです。つまり、私たちが集めた化粧品類は無事に被災者の手にたどり着きました！物資は宮城県浦戸諸島に届けられたようです。協力した下さった皆さん、本当にありがとうございました。私は現在アメリカにいるのでこういった活動は出来ないのですが、佐藤さんはこの活動をまだ続けられていますし被災者の方もまだまだ助けが必要です。遠く離れていはいますがこれからも支援を続けていこうと思っています。

I am posting the picture from Mr. Sato’s blog. The neon tape you see on picture at bottom left is what I used when I was organizing all the goods we collected. That means the goods was deliver to the hands of victims! They were delivered to Urato islands in Miyagi. Thank you so much for your cooperation. I am in the U.S. now, so it is difficult to do project like this again. However, Mr. Sato continue to collect and deliver goods and victims needs help. I might be far far away from Japan, but I will continue to support people in needs.

こちらが集まった募金を使って買った物資です。温かくなってきて来ていることを考えて日焼け止め、制汗剤などこれからの季節に必要なものも買いました。　それと、仙台で落ち合った友達がワシントンＤＣ在住の友達から集まった物資も持ってきてくれました。全部をまとめて、被災地に届けるお手伝いをしてくれる方へ届けに行きました。

その方は仙台市内でスポーツ少年団の団長さんを務める佐藤一彦さんです。佐藤さんも個人で物資集め、提供の活動をされていました。靴、化粧品類を中心に集められていて、最初はスニーカー１足から始まったそうです。現在はたくさんの物資が全国から集まっているそうです。つい最近では岩手の離れ小島を訪問されたそうです。スポーツ少年団のブログで活動の報告をされています。

本来は自分の足で被災地に届けたかったのですが、そこまで至らず協力してもらったみなさんや大量の物資を個人で運搬されている佐藤さんにも申し訳なく思っています。佐藤さんにも現地に一緒に行くお誘いをいただきましたが私の滞在期間が短かったため叶いませんでした。でも、佐藤さんから責任を持ってお届けしますとお言葉をいただいたし、土地勘もあり被災地に何度も足を運んでいる佐藤さんの方が被災者の方のためには良かったのではないのかとも思っています。被災地に届けたら写真などを送ってくださるとのことなので、それまではプロジェクト実行中ということで。

残念ながら最終的に全部集まった物資の写真、佐藤さんに届けた際に撮った写真が手元にないため後日アップします。

被災地に再び（気仙沼に前回に行きました）入って、今回はボランティア活動してたくさんの人と出会い、たくさんのことを考えさせられ自分はどう行動していいのか迷うところです。少しずつブログで今回の経験などを書いていこうと思っています。

These are items that I bought with donated money. Since the weather is getting warm, I bought sunscreen and deodrant which are necessary for the summer time.
I also received items that were collected by friends in Washington DC from the friend that I met up in Sendai. I organized all of them and went to drop them of to a person who is going to help deliver these to the victim of the earthquake and tsunami.

His name is Kazuhiko Sato, a coach of the sports boy scouts within a area of Sendai city. He is also working individually collecting and delivering relief supply. He is collecting shoes and cosmetic goods mainly, and started off with just one sneaker. He has been receiving goods from all over Japan now. Mr. Sato has visited isolated small island in Iwate recently, and reporting his activity on his blog.

My plan was to deliver the items we collected to victims directly, but I was not able to get to that point. I am feeling guilty to people who contributed to this and to Mr. Sato who is working as an individualand delivering large amount of goods alone. He invited me to deliver good to the victims, but it did not work out since I was there for such a short time. Even though I feel guilty, I can trust him and he knows the tsunami effected area better and has visited couple times already that it is probably better for the victims. Mr. Sato will be sending me pictures once the items gets delivered, so I consider as this project is in progress still.

Unfortunatly, I do not have pictures of final amount of the items we collected and the picture of the time we went to drop them off to Mr. Sato  in my hand. I will post it as soon as I get them.

Visiting the tsunami striken area for second time (been to Kesinnuma), doing volunteer work and meeting many people made me think so much. I am bit confused what to do and what I should do. I will be writing about the experience of this visit little by little. 

現在、仙台に向かうバスの中でブログを書いています！After 3.11 in Japan for Women Projectで集まった大量の化粧品類（ボストンバッグに入り切らない+仙台で落ち合う友達も持参)を届けるのとたった1日間だけですが、ボランティア活動をしに行きます。先日、ニューヨーク州のA.B.さんからも募金を頂きました。ありがとうございました。集まった募金の合計は3万2千円、虫除けスプレーや日焼け止め、化粧水、アイシャドウなどを買いました。後程、内訳と詳細を記載します。取り急ぎ、物資が被災地に向かっているという報告でしたー。

I am writing this post on the bus to get to Sendai! I will be delivering the Makeup and skincare products we collected as Women Project and will be doing volunteer work for a day. I received donation from A.B. in New York the other day, Thank you. The total of donated money was 3,2000 Yen. I bought sunscreen, toner, eyeshadow, and more. I will be posting more details soon. I just wanted to let you know that collected items are on its way to where its needed!

先日届いたR.H.さんからの物資とまとめて分類しました！シュシュ、美容パック、化粧ポーチ、日焼け止め、あぶらとり紙など色々な種類のものがたくさん集まりました。１０日以降にアメリカの友達が集めてくれた物資も届く予定です。土曜日には高校の友達M.S.さんが自宅まで募金のお金を届けに来てくれました！現在の合計金額は日本円で３万円弱です。アメリカの物資が届き次第、どんな物資を補充すべきか考えて買い出しに行きます。先日、現地の方と連絡を取り物資提供先の候補もあがりました。確実に決まり次第、報告します。皆さんのご協力、とても感謝しています。

I sorted out all of the items, including the items I received from R.H. the other day. Hair tie, face pack, makeup bag, sunscreen, face oil blotting sheets and lots more kinds items gathered in large quantity. I am supposed to receive goods that my friends in the U.S. collected after May 10th. I even had a high school friend M.S. who came over to my house to donate money directly for this last Saturday! The total is just over 30000 Yen now. Once I receive the items from the U.S, I will go buy items that needs more quantity. I have contacted a person in the shelter and getting idea of where we can send the goods to. I will post where it will be as soon as it is figured out. Thank you everyone for your cooperation.  

I have been insisting my parents to submit the paper work showing the damage of the house from the earthquake. The house is still standing and we can live normal life except the wall has cracks everywhere, roof tile fell and post squeaks every time there is after shock or even strong wind blows. It probably won’t change a thing because many houses is damaged like that and some are even worse. But, I thought it’s better than nothing. My mother finally went on Friday to the city hall with the paper work and picture of the damage, but she did not submitted it. The city hall worker told her that it might be better idea to wait until after shock slows down because the damage could get worse. It was great advice, but didn’t want to think about getting any worse….

実家に帰ってきてから罹災届けを出すように何度も両親を説得してきました。壁にひびが入ったり、瓦が落ちたり、柱が余震や強風のたびにきしむ以外は、家は建って入るし住める状況には変わりはありません。たくさんの家がこのような状況だしもっと被害が出ている家もあるので、出した所で何も変わりはないかもしれません。でも、何もしないより何かしたほうがいいと思い、提出するよう説得していました。金曜日、母がやっと罹災届けを市役所に出しに行きました。ですが、結局出さずに帰ってきてしましました。役員の方が「余震でまだひどくなる可能性があるからもう少し待ったほうがいいかもしれませんよ」っとおしゃったそうです。ありがい助言だけど、考えたくない現実を言われた気がしました。

I went to Kesenmuma, Miyagi last week to deliver instant curry.

We left home 3 am, through Ichinoseki, Iwate and arrived at Kesennuma city fruits and vegetable market at 10 am. It is used as headquarter for disaster control of Kesennuma city since the city hall was damaged by tsunami. Why Kesennuma? My mother has a friend from collage who lives in Kesennuma and requested to deliver to there. She contacted to the city and received answer from them saying they need something that last for while, so we went to Kesennuma.

There were many spot that rose like speed bump on highway from Ibaraki to Iwate. Some were fixed, but it was very bumpy road. I saw many trucks of self defense force, cars with “Delivering relief supply” sign and construction workers on the way to there and back. Once we got off the high way, there were some stores with broken windows from the earthquake. However, I didn’t find too many houses that was damaged from earthquake just looking from outside. It might be because there were not many houses that has traditional Japanese roof tile in that area. As far as I seen in Ibaraki, 6 or 7 houses out of 10 has damage in roof tile. My house is one of them.

As we got closer to Kesennuma, there were shopping district. The most of the stores were hit by tsunami and disposing things inside of the store. We arrived at the fresh produce market, delivered the curry and took some pictures. There is a river right next to the market and it was filled with rubble from the back flow of the tsunami. Variety of relief supply were at the market and city hall workers were working hard to sort them out to each category. Beside the city hall workers, there were self defense force team talking about searching bodies with looking into map.

After we dropped off the curry, we went to Kesennuma city gymnasium to conform the safety of my mother’s friend. She was able to find her friend’s name on the list of people evacuating at the gymnasium and age matches, but gender wasn’t. It is not allowed to make announcement other than distribution of food and goods, so we just waited at entrance for about 10 minutes. There were so many people evacuating at the gymnasium that we couldn’t find her. I could not believe what I was seeing the way to there and the way out of the town. Around the fishing port was filled with strong smell of rotten fish and dried up salt. Sea weed and boxes of fish which was probably kept in freezer before the tsunami was scattered everywhere mixed with rubbles.

 I questioned “how many years is it going to take to recover?”,  ”what can I do to help?” and felt　hopeless. It is a different extent but I myself being victim of the earthquake and seeing this, it changed my view of life. I saw many relief goods arriving from all around the world. I saw many people gathering to do volunteer work. However, the reality is more help is needed now and in long term, too. I am planing on going to do volunteer work while I am in Japan.  

先週、宮城県気仙沼市に支援物資のレトルトカレーを届けてきました。

朝３時に出て１０時くらいに岩手県一関経由で気仙沼市青果市場に着きました。市役所が津波の影響で使えなくなってしまったので青果市場が災害対策本部になっていると役員の方が話していました。なぜ気仙沼？私の母の大学時代の友人が気仙沼市在住ということで母が気仙沼市に行くことを希望していました。事前に連絡し、レトルトカレーの物資提供をしたいと話したところ、「日持ちするものが必要なので是非お願いします」と返事を頂き気仙沼へ届けることにしました。

高速道路は茨城から岩手まで至る所で隆起していて、中には補修されているものもありましたが、かなりでこぼこ道状態でした。行きの道も帰り道もたくさんの自衛隊の車、支援物資運搬中と書いたトラック、土木業者さんなどをたくさん見ました。高速を降りてすぐ見えたのは地震でガラスが割れたりしているお店が何件かありました。瓦屋根のおうちが少なかったせいか、外見を見た限りでは地震の住宅の被害は比較的少なく見えました。茨城県内は１０件中６，７件くらいは瓦が何らかのダメージを受けているように見えます。私の家もそのうちの一つです。

気仙沼市に近づいてくると商店街があり、津波の被害で店内のものをすべて破棄しているお店がほとんどでした。青果市場に着き、１０００食分のレトルトカレーを届け、市場内を写真に取らせていただきました。青果市場の脇には、川が流れていて津波の逆流で色々なものが流されていました。たくさんの物資が届いており、市役所の方々が一生懸命仕分けをされていました。その横では自衛隊の方々が地図を見ながら遺体捜索について話しあっていました。

その後、母の友人の安否(名簿には同姓同名、年齢が一致している方がいるけれど性別が男性になっているので)確認をするために気仙沼市民総合体育館に行きました。配給以外の館内放送はできないということなので出入り口で１０分くらい待ってみましたが、たくさんの方が避難されていて結局確認出来ませんでした。そこまでの道のりと市街に出るまでの光景は現実とは思えないものでした。漁港周辺では生臭さと塩臭さが充満していて、道には海藻や冷凍されていたとみられる魚が至る所に大量の瓦礫と共に散乱していました。

本当に何年かかるかわからない、私に何ができるのだろうという不安と絶望感にかられました。自分も度合いは違えど被災し、この光景をみて人生観が変わりました。現地に行き、たくさんの援助が国内外から届いているのも見えました。たくさんの人達が現地に足を運んでいるのも見えました。でも、まだまだ長期に渡ってたくさんの助けが必要だというのも現状だと思います。私も、日本にいる間にもう一度でも二度でも現地に行く予定です。

I received a package from my friend R.H.! (different from R.H. in DC) Thank you so much for supporting!! I talked to local government worker at Kesennuma on Friday when I went to drop off instant curry about cosmetic items. She said there are some at the distribution center, but it’s not something that they are distributing nor accepting right now. She did not explain why or did not seem want to tell me too much details…. could be there are not enough amount to distribute, don’t wanna over crowd the distribution center or shelter, or maybe there is other reason why they are not distributing them. However, she did say that the most of women is living with no makeup at all. She was one of them.

As far as I found, what kind of goods are accepted or distributed all depend on size of the shelter, what people are requesting, what or how much there is to distribute. It will depend on how much contribution there will be, but I am thinking of contacting smaller shelter.

 I will write about my experience of visiting Kesennuma in details soon.

お友達のR.H.さんから（ワシントンDCのR.H.さんとは違う方です）小包が届きました！ありがとうございます!! 先週金曜日気仙沼市にレトルトカレーを届けに行ったときに市役所の方と化粧品類について質問をしました。彼女曰く、物資を仕分けするところには多少なりとも届いてはいるが避難所生活をしている方には配給されていないし受け付けている物資ではないと言われました。理由などは教えてくれず、あまりそれ以上のことを話してくれる様子もありませんでした….。配給できる程の物資がない、仕分け場所や避難所のスペースを混雑させないため、 または他にも配給までに至らない理由があるのだと思います。ですが、彼女は避難所の方ほとんどがすっぴん状態で生活されていますと話していました。彼女もそのうちの一人でした。

私が見つけた限りでは、どんな物資が受け入れ、配給されているかは避難所の大きさ、どんな物資がリクエストされているか、何がどれだけ配給できる状況にあるかによって変わってくるようです。どれだけの物資または募金が集まるかによりますが、小規模の避難所に連絡してみようと思います。

気仙沼訪問についてはまた後日詳しく記載します。

I have been getting response from people about this project little by little! Thank you everyone for supporting!! I also have received donation today, too. Thank you R. H from Washington D.C. for your donation. I’ve donated some from myself and we have total of US$300 now. It’s not matter of amount, it’s the heart and thought that counts. Like Japanese saying “Road of 2500 mile starts from 1 step”,  any help is appreciated.

I am going to Miyagi with my parents and couple more people to donate 1000 instant curry made by Iijima Chikusan!
